What kind of hard drives should I be using for my DVR?
–For high speed applications
Using Machine Vision cameras, we would use high performance drives like WD4000FYYZ. Mainly because these are built for RAID arrays, performance, speed and 24×7 duty cycles.
–For our POC kits
We use WD40PURX which are hard drives built for RAID arrays, 24×7 duty cyles, low heat and prioritized write performance. They purposely shorten individual drive error correction time outs to continue writing the video data and let the raid controller handle corrections.
High speed applications need the faster drive because many of the machine vision cameras cannot use H.264 encoding and have to rely on JPEG encoding or no encoding. JPEG is only 10:1 so it requires a faster drive to record more data. H.264 encoding like the POC Kits, have a 25:1 compression, so the drives require much less physical hard drive space and much less for writing/reading speeds which make it ideal for the purple drives with low heat. This extends both the hdd live and DVR life.
Drives like WD4003FZEX are desktop drives that are not meant for 24×7 duty cycles. They are built for bust performance that you would typically find in booting windows, gaming, etc.. Not 24×7 write/read jobs. Desktop drives are not meant to be placed in RAID arrays, and the WD Black Drives generally generate too much heat. Especially when stacked in RAID arrays which lead to premature failure. We’ve seen some of these drives fail as early as 6 months to a year due to 24×7 duty cycles and heat.
What kind of cable should I be using for my DVR and Cameras?
For our SDI Power over Coax DVRs and Cameras, we recommend quad shield RG6. A good quality RG6 will be able to run 400ft, RG59 will carry the signal but only for short distances depending on the quality of the RG59.
For any analog, or analog HD systems, you can use RG59 up to 1000ft to 1500ft.
How can I update my firmware?
Option 1: Update Directly from DVR
- Download data file to USB Drive
- HD960HPC Download File
- Unzip the file after downloading
- Copy the data file and copy to root directory of a USB thumb drive
- Insert the USB Drive into the DVR
- Select “Yes” to the popup “Upgrade firmware from USB disk?”
If there is no popup on the DVR screen, go to DVR Menu > System > Utility > Firmware Update.
- The DVR will reboot automatically.
Option 2: Upgrade via Network
- Unzip the files to your desktop or directory
- Run networkupgrader
- Pop-up will ask for a firmware file
- Select the edvr_hd960 file, and it’ll pop up a firmware window:
- If your DVR does not show up on the check list, click “add a model directly”, add the DVR IP address AND port number (usually 80), then click “add model”
- Now your DVR(s) will show up on the list where you can check the box.
- Once you check the box, type in the common password (your admin password for the DVR, usually 12345), and hit upgrade.
- The DVR Firmware will upload and then reboot the DVR.
